Having exchange students at O’Gorman adds to our diverse culture. Each month I hope to spotlight a different student and let O’Gorman students learn more about the various cultures represented here at O’Gorman!
This month our spotlight student is Carl Schulze Esking.
Carl is originally from Muenster, Germany where he lives on a farm with his family. He enjoys playing tennis, soccer, and swimming.
Coming from Germany, “improving my English Skills and spending half a year at an American high school.” Esking says is the hardest to get used to.
The biggest culture shock, “was seeing all the young kids driving at 14.” Esking says. In Germany, the legal driving age is 18!
His father came to America for a semester in college and that is how Esking learned about O’Gorman, “My host family is also an O’Gorman family their 4 kids go to O’Gorman so it was the best and easiest way.” says Esking.
Coming to a new country can take guts especially when you know nobody and are quite young. Living here and speaking a foreign language is a lot for a teenager.
Esking continues to take part in school activities and find new things to do in Sioux Falls. When asked, “I can’t see myself living here in the United States, but I might come back to America during college for half a year or longer.” Esking says.
