Hudson Kowalchuk, a junior at O’Gorman, hails from Winnipeg, Canada. He came to the US to play on the Sioux Falls U16 Power Hockey Team as a defenseman.
Despite the proximity of the United States and Canada, there are many unique differences between the two countries. One such difference is the currency. , “The currency is quite different here. For instance, something may cost twelve dollars in the US, but in Canada, it would be around sixteen dollars.” Kowalchuk says.
Moving to the US has its challenges, and when asked about what he misses most, “My dog, Blizzard, and my family.” Kowalchuk says.
Did you know that healthcare in Canada is free? As a hockey player, the fear of getting injured is always present. Kowalchuk discusses how the consequences of getting hurt in the US are much greater than in Canada due to the healthcare system.
As the season progresses, Kowalchuk is juggling grades, hockey, and living in a whole new country.
His team hopes to compete in nationals from April 1st through the 6th.
