Girls basketball practice and tryouts kick off on Nov. 25, marking the beginning of the O’Gorman season. Coaches hope girls will continue to play or try out for the first time this year, using basketball as a way to step out of their comfort zone and stay healthy.
At tryouts, athletes will be expected to perform a range of drills that will help a coach assess and develop the best team to be successful this upcoming year.
O’Gorman Girls Basketball head coach Kent Kolsrud hopes for a successful season this year, saying “We return a very solid nucleus of kids and are excited about kids competing for varsity spots and roles. It was a great year last year and this team will have high expectations as well.” Kolsrud knows and expects the needs of this incoming team to drive a winning season. “Keys for us will be having great team chemistry, playing great defense, rebounding, and taking care of the ball,” Kolsrud said. “This is a team that should be able to play fast by pressing and running in transition and be a lot of fun to watch!”
Senior Julia Eggert feels a victorious season is an arms reach away this year, saying, “I am feeling good about the potential- we lost good leadership but we do have a lot of experience coming back.” Eggert has bittersweet emotions about this being her final year playing high school basketball. “I am pretty sad to say goodbye to this sport, however, there is no other team I would play my last year with,” Eggert said. She greatly appreciates the experiences basketball has brought to her, voicing that “O’Gorman basketball has taught me leadership and the importance of hard work.”
Basketball can be a great way to meet new people or just hang out with friends, for no prior basketball experience is required to try out. In participating, athletes will get a great deal of exercise, whether to stay in shape in the off-season of their other sport or just have fun in a competitive and beneficial environment.
The O’Gorman Girl’s Basketball team is an excellent way to stay in shape, whatever the reason might be. With talented players and passionate coaches, O’Gorman is being set up for a great season.
