This past weekend, I attended “We Live in Time”, starring Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield, a tear-jerking, heartwarming movie that follows Almut (Florence Pugh) and Tobias (Andrew Garfield), who fall in love and have a child. Spoiler alert: Almut gets diagnosed with cancer and does not want to waste months on treatment for it to possibly work so they focus their time on her last months, living life to the fullest. Here is what I thought of it:
First, the movie lacked a special element. The storyline was generic and predictable, similar to all those Hallmark Christmas movies your grandmother watches. I kept wanting something big to happen that brought the whole movie together, but I just never got to that part. There was no part in the movie that I did not see coming already and I did not like that.
Second, it jumped around a lot. If you are paying attention to the movie it is hard to tell what part in time you are watching. The storyline jumps from when the couple first met, to when they have their child, to after they have been living together for a while, and so on. The directors, in my opinion, do not do a very good job of changing what the characters look like to distinguish between the different times.
All in all the movie was boring for me to watch. It also reminded me of “The Fault in Our Stars”, just changing the circumstances a bit. If you are there for a sad predictable heartbreaking story, this movie just might be good for you.
