O’Gorman has always been know for our outstanding speech program because of a great coach and the students that participate. This year with four competitions under their belts, there are still a handful of undefeated students.
Adud Arop, a long-time member of the team, has always loved competing, “My favorite category to watch is duo, but my favorite to compete in is POI (Program Oral Interp).” Arop says. She is currently competing in drama, poetry, and POI.
With the state competition happening this past weekend, O’Gorman had four superiors with distinction, the highest ranking, and one superior in storytelling. A very great honor for our school.
With these high rankings come challenges: “ Memorization was a big challenge I and many others faced this year. You can only do so much on script.” Arop said. Students are expected to perform 5-10 minute pieces all from memory. Talk about dedication!
Over the past years, O’Gorman has sent at least one student to nationals, the hardest competition to get into. This year, nationals are June 16-21 in Des Moines, Iowa.
