Community service, a core practice of Christianity, is heavily emphasized at O’Gorman High School. Students are given the opportunity to choose from a multitude of opportunities, including the annual Prince of Peace formal. This event, run by the school’s Student Council, promotes further participation in charity along with a deeper connection between generations.
Student Council’s co-advisor, Ms. Rahn, elaborated on the primary motives behind the dance: “It’s about honoring the elderly residents, creating moments of connection, and showing them that they are valued and remembered,” she said. “It sets a positive example of how community service can be woven into everyday life through simple but powerful acts of kindness.” The event encourages participants to step out of their comfort zones, an act that proves to be of value in other aspects of life.
The formal is not only beneficial for the residents at Prince of Peace, but for the students as well. Student Council president Anya Bornitz expressed her hopes for the residents after the memorable night: “I hope the residents at Prince of Peace had a night full of fun and fellowship with a different crowd than they are typically used to…It is always so rewarding to see how much of an impact students can have on the residents, even if it simply makes their day,” she said. While the students mingle with the residents, they are able to develop other Christian virtues, such as patience and empathy.
As the years continue to fly by, it is imperative to give thanks and honor to those who set the scene, and the Prince of Peace formal provides a heart-warming example of a potential connection.
