This year’s homecoming week ran from September 23 to September 27. The week was filled with fun all around as the high school students grew in excitement for the upcoming game.
As always, homecoming week is known for its fabulous dress down day themes. On Monday, the theme was PJ with a Pal. On Tuesday, the theme was Time Travel Day. On Wednesday, the theme was Harley (biker) vs. Hawaiian (surfer). On Thursday, the theme was Rhyme without Reason. On Friday, the OGHS students showed their school spirit by going all out in the theme of Spirit Wear.
Other highlights during the week included the Advisory Door Decorating Contest and an all-school assembly with speaker Renee Bondi. The Door Decorating Contest took place on Monday, September 23 and the students brought to life decorative ideas as they competed for the prize of a dress down day. Almost every door in the academic wings was decorated, raising levels of excitement throughout the student body. The assembly took place on Tuesday, September 24, with guest Renee Bondi, a popular Catholic recording artist, speaker, and author.
The Variety Show and the Homecoming Coronation took place on Thursday, September 26 with a large turnout of students, families, and other members from the O’Gorman community. The O’Gorman students put on a phenomenal performance, and at the close, they had the privilege of congratulating the newly crowned Homecoming King and Queen, Daniel Vasquez and Anya Bornitz.
“Homecoming week really brings a sense of unity into our school. It is definitely one of the most exciting and memorable times throughout the entire school year for me,” said Homecoming Queen, Anya Bornitz.
On Friday, the day of the game, the entire student body along with the new inductees to the Cathedral/ O’Gorman High School Hall of Fame attended Homecoming Mass. Mass was celebrated by Bishop Donald DeGrood along with the assistance of many members of the clergy. After Mass, the students enjoyed a lunch sponsored by Pizza Ranch and prepared for an afternoon of fun. The festivities were brought out to McEneaney Field where intense dodgeball matches and an incredible Powder Puff football game took place. After a close game, the senior powder puff team was victorious. To the end of the outdoor fun, the students took part in Class Challenges. A number of students volunteered to represent their grade as a whole, competing in a series of contests including watermelon eating, relay-racing in inflatable sumo-wrestler suits, and a relay-style shoe game all for the prize of a dress down day.
The school day closed with a pep rally in O’Gorman’s Performing Arts Center. The excitement was led by the O’Gorman Marching Knights and the O’Gorman Sideline Cheer Team. To finish the pep rally, a Homecoming Memories slideshow was played to commemorate all of the fun and festivities. Another Homecoming week is in the books, and the themes of school spirit, community, and fun were present for everyone to enjoy.
